How Express Entry Works

Express Entry is Canada's fastest immigration pathway for skilled workers. When you create your profile, you're placed in a pool where you're ranked against other candidates using the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS). The Government of Canada now conducts both general draws and category-based targeted draws from this pool, inviting the highest-ranked candidates to apply for permanent residence.

In addition to general all-program draws, IRCC conducts targeted category-based draws prioritizing candidates in French-language proficiency, healthcare and social services, STEM occupations, trade occupations, agriculture and agri-food, and education. This approach allows candidates with specific skills and language abilities to be selected more quickly.

The entire process typically takes 6 months from application to approval, making it the preferred choice for thousands of international professionals seeking to immigrate to Canada.

Federal Skilled Worker (FSW) Requirements

Work Experience

Minimum 1 year of paid work experience in a TEER 0, 1, 2, or 3 occupation within the past 10 years.

Language Proficiency

CLB 7 (IELTS 6.0 overall) minimum for speaking and listening; CLB 6 for reading and writing.

Education

Canadian secondary or post-secondary certificate, diploma, or degree (foreign credentials must be assessed).

Selection Factors

Age (under 45 is ideal), education level, language proficiency, and Canadian work experience all boost your CRS score.

Federal Skilled Trades (FST) Program

The Federal Skilled Trades Program is designed for workers with skilled trade experience. This is the third Express Entry program and provides an alternative pathway for trade professionals who may not meet the education requirements of FSW but have substantial hands-on experience in their field.

  • At least 2 years of full-time paid work experience in a skilled trade occupation within the past 5 years
  • Work experience must be in a TEER 2 or 3 occupation
  • Meet the job requirements for that trade as set out in the National Occupational Classification (NOC)
  • CLB 5 (IELTS 4.5) minimum for speaking and listening; CLB 4 (IELTS 3.5) for reading and writing
  • No formal education requirement (major advantage over FSW)
  • Either a valid job offer for at least 1 year OR a certificate of qualification in the trade from a Canadian provincial or territorial authority

Eligible Trades

FST includes 19 eligible skilled trade occupations, including: industrial electricians, construction trades specialists, welders, heavy equipment operators, HVAC technicians, plumbers, carpenters, maintenance mechanics, food and beverage servers (19 new trades added February 2025, including cooks and chefs). Provincial trades certificates are particularly valuable for FST applicants.

Canadian Experience Class (CEC)

If you've already worked in Canada, the CEC might be the fastest path to permanent residence. This program requires Canadian work experience in TEER categories and language skills, but no education assessment is needed.

  • Minimum 1 year of paid Canadian work experience in a TEER 0, 1, 2, or 3 occupation (within 3 years before application)
  • CLB 7 (IELTS 6.0) minimum for TEER 0 and 1 occupations
  • CLB 5 (IELTS 4.5) minimum for TEER 2 and 3 occupations
  • No age, education, or job offer requirements
  • No assessment of foreign credentials needed
  • Typically fastest processing: 6 months from ITA to approval

Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS)

Your CRS score determines your ranking in the Express Entry pool. Candidates with the highest scores receive Invitations to Apply (ITAs) in each draw. The maximum CRS score is 1,200 points, based on:

  • Core human capital factors (460 points): Age, education, language proficiency, and Canadian work experience
  • Spouse/common-law partner factors (460 points): Same factors applied to your partner
  • Skill transferability factors (100 points): Foreign work experience in your field
  • Additional factors (200 points): Provincial Nominee Program nomination (600 points instantly added), job offer, or provincial residence

CRS Tip

A PNP nomination instantly adds 600 points to your CRS score, making it one of the fastest ways to receive an ITA. Even with a moderate CRS score, a PNP nomination virtually guarantees selection.

Category-Based Selection (2025-2026)

Starting in 2023 and actively used throughout 2025-2026, IRCC now conducts targeted category-based draws in addition to general all-program draws. These draws prioritize candidates in specific occupation groups and language proficiency levels, allowing candidates with in-demand skills to be selected more quickly regardless of their overall CRS score.

French-Language Proficiency

Candidates with NCLC 7 or higher in all four language abilities (speaking, listening, reading, writing) receive priority invitations. This category receives the highest number of invitations, with targets of 8.5% in 2025, 9.5% in 2026, and 10% in 2027 (outside Quebec).

Healthcare & Social Services

Healthcare professionals and social services workers are in high demand. This category includes doctors, nurses, psychologists, social workers, and care aides in TEER 0-3 occupations.

STEM Occupations

Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics professionals are prioritized. Note: Most IT occupations were removed from this category, except for cybersecurity specialists and similar security-focused roles.

Trade Occupations

Skilled tradespeople in TEER 2 and 3 occupations are prioritized, including the 19 occupations added in February 2025 (such as cooks and chefs).

Agriculture & Agri-Food

Workers in agriculture and agri-food processing occupations are targeted, reflecting Canada's need for workers in this sector.

Education Occupations

Teachers and education professionals are in demand. This is a NEW category added in February 2025 to address teacher shortages across Canada.

Category Updates

Removed Category: The Transport category was removed in February 2025. Future Categories Under Consideration for 2026: Three new categories are being evaluated for implementation in 2026: senior managers and executives, scientists and researchers, and military personnel.

Express Entry Draws & Cutoff Scores

The Government of Canada conducts regular draws from the Express Entry pool using both all-program draws and targeted category-based draws. The frequency and number of ITAs issued depend on Canada's immigration levels plan. Recent 2026 draws have focused on in-Canada candidates, particularly those with Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) nominations and Canadian work experience.

  • Both general all-program draws and category-based targeted draws are now standard practice
  • Category-based draws target specific occupations and language proficiencies (French, healthcare, STEM, trades, agriculture, education)
  • In-Canada candidates and those with PNP nominations receive priority in 2026 draws
  • Cutoff scores vary significantly between general draws (typically 500-560 points) and category-based draws (often lower)
  • Each draw invites between 2,500-4,250 candidates depending on targets and category
  • Candidates receive 60 days to complete and submit their permanent residence application
  • Cutoff scores fluctuate based on the pool of candidates, draw targets, and category focus

Inadmissibility Factors

Important

Even with a high CRS score, you can be deemed inadmissible to Canada on security, criminality, medical, or misrepresentation grounds. Medical examinations are mandatory, and criminal background checks are conducted. Any misrepresentation or fraud in your application will result in a permanent ban from Canada.
