Global Immigration Options
While Canada offers excellent immigration pathways, some clients benefit from exploring alternative destinations. Different countries offer unique advantages: the USA provides access to the world's largest economy, the UK offers cultural familiarity, the EU provides visa-free travel across 27 countries, and Caribbean programs offer fastest citizenship timelines.
We help clients evaluate which pathway best matches their goals, timeline, budget, and family circumstances.
USA EB-5 Investor Visa Program
Investment Required
USD $800,000 (targeted employment area) or USD $1,050,000 (standard). Must be an at-risk investment in a US business.
Job Creation
Must create or preserve 10 full-time jobs for US workers.
Processing
2-3 years total. Significant backlogs for certain nationalities (China, Vietnam, India).
Benefits
Green card for investor and family; access to US market and education system.
- Investment Model: Direct investment in business or invest through Regional Center (fund)
- Family Included: Spouse and children under 21 automatically included
- Source of Funds: Must prove lawful origin of capital (can be gift, business proceeds, etc.)
- Current Status: EB-5 is a Congressional program authorized through September 30, 2026. It remains active and accepting applications, though its long-term future is uncertain given the introduction of the Gold Card program (see below)
- Green Card Timeline: I-526 approval, I-485 green card, then conditional status for 2 years
- Conditional Removal: Must demonstrate job creation was completed to remove conditions
EB-5 Considerations
The EB-5 program remains available but faces an uncertain future. The Trump administration has introduced the Gold Card as a competing pathway (below). EB-5 petitions filed before September 30, 2026 are protected under the grandfathering clause, meaning they should be processed to completion even if the program changes. However, significant processing backlogs and investment risk remain important factors to evaluate.
USA "Gold Card" Permanent Residence Program NEW 2025
Donation Required
USD $1,000,000 unrestricted gift to the US government. No investment return — this is a donation, not an investment.
No Job Creation
Unlike EB-5, no job creation requirement and no ongoing business obligations.
Fast Processing
Weeks, not years. USD $15,000 non-refundable processing fee per applicant (including each family member).
Legal Uncertainty
Created by Executive Order, not Congress. Subject to legal challenges and may not survive a change in administration.
- Launched: December 10, 2025 via Executive Order 14351. Applications accepted at trumpcard.gov
- Eligibility: Applicants must already qualify under an existing visa category (e.g. EB-1A extraordinary ability, EB-2 NIW)
- Family Members: Each dependent also requires a separate $1M donation and $15,000 processing fee
- Donation vs. Investment: Unlike EB-5, the $1M is an unrestricted gift — there is no return on the money
- Processing Fee: $15,000 per person (non-refundable), paid at time of application
- Result: Permanent residence (green card) classified under EB-1/EB-2 categories
Important: Gold Card Uncertainties
The Gold Card program was created by executive action, not by Congress. Legal experts have raised concerns that the program may face court challenges as it operates outside the traditional statutory immigration framework. The requirement that applicants must already qualify under an existing visa category (such as EB-1A) significantly narrows who can actually apply. Prospective applicants should seek professional legal advice before committing funds. The program's longevity beyond the current administration is not guaranteed.
UK Investor Immigration
The UK offers investor visas for high-net-worth individuals. The requirements have recently changed, making it less attractive, but it remains an option for those seeking European presence.
- Investment Amount: GBP £2,000,000 (approx. CAD $3.5M) minimum
- Route: Tier 1 Investor visa (recently reformed)
- Investment Options: UK government bonds, shares in UK-registered companies
- Processing: 4-8 weeks for visa decision
- Timeline to Settlement: 5 years (can apply for indefinite leave to remain)
- Family: Spouse and dependent children included
- English Requirement: Must speak English at B1 level
- Maintenance Fund: Must maintain GBP £945,000 in UK bank account
Post-Brexit Changes
The UK reformed investor visas in 2022. The new requirements are more stringent. Funds cannot come from unexplained sources or Russian/Belarusian nationals in certain circumstances. Investor visas are less common than they once were.
Caribbean Citizenship Programs
Several Caribbean nations offer citizenship by investment programs. These provide the fastest pathway to a second citizenship, often within 3-6 months. Popular options include St. Kitts & Nevis and Dominica.
