An investor must prove business experience in the same way as an entrepreneur, but with a broader scope allowing also qualifying with management experience of at least 5 employees only. The legally accumulated net worth, however, has to be at least $800,000. Further, the entrepreneur must accumulate at least 35 points using a selection criteria point system.
Upon meeting these requirements the investor has to make an investment of $400,000 interest free for five years into a Government approved fund. The investment itself is guaranteed, and will be paid back after the five years are elapsed. Many investors use at that point a loan option, which is also referred often to as a ‘walk-away-option’. Subject to changes the investor receives after a one-time payment of $120,000 a loan of $280,000. However, there will be no refund after five years, in principle the $120,000 is used for the interest of the 5 year $280,000 loan. Even, in the first moment it looks like the investor gives away $120,000, most applicants are using this option. Reason is that they keep $280,000 cash for other investments, which interest can pay off the $120,000 and also generate a profit.
In comparison to the entrepreneur, investors are not subject to any terms and conditions after landing. Investors are able to move after landing freely to any place in Canada doing any activity they like, which includes also simply doing nothing.
